Most of the money spent on TV goes towards programmes on BBC One and BBC Two, but it also pays for the BBC News channel, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Three, BBC Four, BBC Parliament, regional versions of BBC One and BBC Two, BBC HD and Red Button interactive services.

In arguement against TV LICENSE, i think that it should be abolished. 

My reasoning for thinking this, is i believe that companys such as BBC and ITV should fight to get the best programmes enabaling them to get money from audience is various ways such as voting. There is no competition involded as companies now what ever they produce to put on air they will get paid for, vier tv licese’s.

The reading talked about the ideological, economic and cultural factors which bear upon subcultures. The three subcultures I identified at Sussex were Orange Girls, people who work more than drink every night, and … The thing that they all have in common  is music. They all have a genre that seems to define them. On the other hand, I could look at it another way and say that music defines a subculture to a certain extent. But, then, at the same time there are so many people who would argue that they have a much broader sense in music, so it would be impossible for them to identify with just one subculture. I am having a little difficulty with this assignment, as when I went out to talk to people, or look at the way they were dressed, I could not identify a subculture that they belonged to.

I guess I feel like every single subculture, whether it exists or not, identifies with it’s own people. It just depends on what classes it as a subculture. For example, I would just lump myself in the slightly weird/posh student subculture. I really do not identify with people that slap on make up like no tomorrow, only care about sex, and wear skimpy skirts that would look better as belts. Oh, and have orange stained skin from fake tans and whatever else. There is so much stuff, music generally, that quickly becomes mainstream after it has been picked out by the “music buffs”. Surely this goes as far to centralise a subculture into the lime light so it does not exist anymore?

My second picture of popular culture is … i have chosen this as it repersents a group experience sunbathing on the beach.

The Film The American Dream produced in 1973 looks at how various women are portrayed in the film in relation to traditional stereotypes such as ‘Housewife’ and ‘mother’. It is also concerned with the amount of time women got on camera, as most of the film was taken up with male shoots and lastly to whats extent women were percieved to be active or passive.

However in repsonse to this Carol Clover a Key Theorist within Media Studies, has aruged in her theory  the ‘Final girl’ (specifically refers to the last woman or girl alive to confront the killer, ostensibly the one left to tell the story) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_girl) . This is shown clearly in the film Halloween. Lourie Strode who promotes the Moral code of no smoking, drinking, sexual activity, attending education and holds down a job unlike all friends in directly confronted with the fear of the killer. All Louries friendsget attacked by the killer as the as breakers of the moral code however Lourie herself manages to escape the threat on many occasions.

Secondly, the text I have chosen to analyse is ER, a hospital drama series that ended last year. I really enjoyed watching ER when I was able to, the episodic format of ER daily life kept you involved, but then there were wider individual story lines that kept people interested for entire seasons. For the female characters in the series there is definitely a strong sense of independence in the work place, and in life. The character of Sam comes to mind, and how she is a strong minded single mother, trying to deal with her delinquent son, but doing a fantastic job as a nurse also. A lot of the senior positions in the ER hospital are taken by women. The fictional County General Hospital in Chicago is represented as a safe place, depending on what is going on. It is obvious that there is a huge sense of community in the hospital team. The world outside the hospital is also represented, when we see inside the personal lives of some of the characters. Some mysteries are never unanswered in the series. Women definitely have a lot of freedom in the hospital, and the men arr often compassionate as well. Some doctors come across as arseholes because they do not see things a certain way, or are simply complicated characters, but this seems to play to their strengths.
